Treating Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a really common skin condition caused by an excess of melanin, creating darker patches that sit on the surface of the skin. It is a common but easily treatable skin condition, and one that we regularly treat in the Secret Garden Skin Clinic. Hyperpigmentation isn’t usually itchy, painful, or harmful, but it can make people feel incredibly self conscious - and we want everybody to feel happy and confident in their skin.

What causes Hyperpigmentation?

While typically harmless, there are lots of factors that can contribute to hyperpigmentation (the darkening of patches of the skin). Our skin cells create melanin, and when those skin cells are damaged or unhealthy, the melanin can clump which causes some areas of the skin to appear much darker than the rest.

Some of the contributing factors of hyperpigmentation include:

  • Certain diseases such as Addison’s disease

  • Sun damage

  • Some medications such as oral contraceptives

  • Genetics

  • Hormone changes

  • Vitamin deficiency

  • Thyroid disorders

Answering the Hyperpigmentation Questions

“What is the biggest cause of hyperpigmentation?”

Sun damage is the number one cause of hyperpigmentation. If you can, ensure you always wear a facial SPF, wear a sun hat, and avoid direct sunlight if possible. If you stay out of the sunshine as much as possible when you are younger, you’ll thank yourself when you’re older.

“Can you treat hyperpigmentation?”

Yes! We have a range of treatments in clinic that successfully treat the appearance of hyperpigmentation, leaving your skin smooth and evenly toned. Some of the treatments we use to treat hyperpigmentation include chemical peels and laser skin rejuvenation.

“Is hyperpigmentation permanent?”

Without treatment, hyperpigmentation can last for years, and sometimes forever. With the right skincare, a few lifestyle changes, and in clinic treatment we can even up your tone and lift the pigment away.

“Does hyperpigmentation come back after treatment?”

If you continue to expose your skin to the sun then the hyperpigmentation will return. However, if you continue to follow our advice post treatment, and pop back to see us every now and then to maintain your skin’s health, you should remain hyperpigmentation free.

“What can I do to avoid getting hyperpigmentation?”

Avoid direct sunlight, apply a facial SPF daily, use a sun hat, use vitamin C and retinol in your skincare regimen, and try not to touch or pick at your skin as inflammation can result in pigmentation developing.
