Acne and Your Skin

Acne is a very upsetting skin condition that affects most people at some point. If you’re suffering from Acne – don’t worry. We can successfully treat both active acne, and the lasting effects of acne scarring in clinic.

What causes Acne?

There are lots of different causes of Acne: hair follicles and pores can become blocked with oil, dead skin or bacteria, hormone levels increase during puberty triggering too much sebum production, genetics (yes, genetics!), periods, pregnancy, medical conditions and sometimes in reaction to certain medications.

Your skin needs to maintain a healthy pH balance to look and feel its best. If your skins pH level is slightly off – signs include dryness, redness, or (you’ve guessed it) acne! Sebum is the oily substance produced by your skin and the amount of sebum that gets produced is affected by your skin’s pH level. It’s vital that the right amount of sebum is produced in order to keep skin healthy and reduce conditions like acne. When too much sebum is produced, the result is oily skin, clogged pores and acne.

Busting the Acne skin myths

“Is Acne caused by poor hygiene?”

The cleanliness of your skin will not be the main cause of your acne. There are underlying conditions (all listed above) that are the cause of Acne but poor hygiene is not one of them.

“Can Acne be caused by a bad diet?”

No, lots of research has been carried out into the impact of certain foods on the skin. While an increase in sugar may cause some people to break out in a few pimples that will disappear, you cannot develop Acne through diet.

“Does sunshine heal Acne?”

While exposure to the sunshine can cause your skin to darken and ‘improve’ the appearance of your skin, it’s doing more damage than good. Not only does sunshine/UV light not treat the initial cause of the Acne, it also damages the skin and prolonged exposure can cause serious health risks.

If you’re using sun or worse still sunbeds to treat Acne, please give us a call today and we’ll treat your Acne so that you’re as happy with your skin in the middle of winter as you are in the summer!

“Is Acne contagious?”

No! It is not possible to pass Acne onto other people. It is an unfortunate condition that has no reflection on the person themself. It is however very upsetting, which is why we’ve worked so hard to perfect the topical treatments and medical grade skincare regimes that will help manage your acne for good.

Treating Acne

When you visit us in clinic, we’ll carry out a full skin analysis to understand the cause of your acne. We’ll then start you on a programme that is bespoke to your skin and consist of topical treatments in the clinic, and medical grade skin care at home. If you need medical assistance throughout your skincare such as antibiotics to fight underlying infections in your skin, our consultant pharmacist will prescribe these for you.
